Ontology-based metadata schema for Chinese digital libraries

In this paper, we discuss metadata schemes applied in Chinese digital library projects, as well as their common methodology, elements and application problems. Problems and issues of these metadata schemes are analyzed. Based on this analysis, we put forward a formal ontology for Chinese digital library: the ontology concepts description starts from IFLA’s proposal FRBR (Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records), but some concepts of FRBR are renamed according to Chinese specialization. We anticipate that the ontology will be used to describe metadata for digital contents.
